HABITATION OF CLASS DISCUSSION AS A MEANS FORMATION OF CITIZENSHIP COMPETENCIES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of classroom deliberation as a means of developing elementary school students' civic competence. These civic competences include civic knowledge, civic skills, and civic disposition, which are the foundation for developing democratic and responsible citizens. This study employed a qualitative approach with library research, with data sources consisting of books, scientific journal articles, and relevant official documents published in 2020 and later. Data collection was conducted through documentation, while data analysis utilized content analysis . The study results indicate that classroom deliberation plays a significant role in developing students' civic competence. Through deliberation activities, students not only understand the concept of democracy theoretically but also are able to implement it in their daily lives. Classroom deliberation has been shown to improve students' critical thinking skills, communication skills, and attitudes of tolerance and responsibility. However, the implementation of classroom deliberation still faces various challenges, such as the dominance of conventional learning methods and teachers' limited understanding of participatory learning. Therefore, systematic efforts are needed to improve teacher competency, integrate deliberation into learning, and provide support from the school environment to foster a democratic culture. Therefore, fostering classroom deliberation can be an effective strategy for optimally developing elementary school students' civic competence.
