Principal leadership plays a strategic role in realizing the implementation of the "Merdeka Belajar" (Freedom to Learn) policy in elementary schools. Educational transformation that emphasizes independent learning, creativity, and differentiated learning requires adaptive, innovative, and collaborative leadership. This study aims to examine in depth how principal leadership contributes to realizing "Merdeka Belajar" (Freedom to Learn) in elementary schools through a literature review approach. The method used is literature review . This review analyzes various recent research findings (2020–2025) relevant to educational leadership and the implementation of Merdeka Belajar. The study findings indicate that the successful implementation of Merdeka Belajar is strongly influenced by the principal's transformational leadership style , which empowers teachers, creates a positive school culture, and supports learning innovation. However, several obstacles remain, such as low managerial competence of principals, limited resources, teacher resistance to change, and a lack of understanding of the Merdeka Belajar concept. Possible solutions include improving leadership competence through ongoing training, strengthening teacher learning communities, utilizing digital technology, and implementing constructive academic supervision. Therefore, effective principal leadership is key to creating a learning environment that is independent, innovative, and student-centered.
