THE ROLE OF CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN DEVELOPING ATTITUDES AND TOLERANCE AMONG STUDENTS

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Civics Education in fostering tolerance among students in the school environment. The background of this research is based on the continued discovery of various forms of intolerance among students, such as bullying, discrimination, and conflict due to differences in background. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method through a review of various relevant scientific journals, books, and academic sources published since 2020. Data collection techniques were carried out through a systematic literature search, while data analysis used content analysis techniques to identify patterns and findings from previous research. The results of the study indicate that Civics Education plays a strategic role in instilling the value of tolerance through values-based learning, participatory methods, and teacher role models. However, the implementation of learning still faces obstacles, such as the dominance of lecture methods and the lack of internalization of values in real practice. Therefore, more contextual and experience-based learning innovations are needed, along with support from an inclusive school environment. Thus, Civics Education is expected to shape students' character to be tolerant and respectful of diversity.
