Studies Library : The Role of Civic Education in Instilling Human Rights Values in Elementary School Students

Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in fostering students' awareness of human rights values from an early age. This study aims to examine the role of Civics Education (PKn) in instilling human rights values in elementary school students. This study employed a qualitative approach with library research. Data were obtained through a search of various literature sources from Google Scholar, Sinta, Garuda, and ResearchGate databases covering publication years 2022–2026. The data collection process involved selecting and filtering articles based on topic suitability, educational level, and source credibility. Ten relevant articles were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The research results show that Civics Education plays a strategic role in instilling human rights values, such as justice, non-discrimination, freedom of expression, and respect for human dignity. Interactive, contextual, and reflective Civics learning can help students understand and internalize human rights values in their daily lives. Furthermore, the role of teachers as facilitators and a supportive school environment are crucial factors in the successful instillation of these values. However, implementation challenges persist, such as a lack of learning innovation and low student participation. Therefore, collaborative efforts between teachers, schools, and parents are needed to create effective learning. Thus, Civics Education contributes to shaping students who are aware of their rights and obligations and able to apply human rights values in their social lives.
