Abstract

Low literacy skills are one of the problems of education in Indonesia. One of the factors of literacy ability is the ability to read. In fact, students' reading ability in lower grades is still lacking. This is indicated by the low initial reading ability of students in lower classes. This research aims to determine the effect of big book media on the beginning reading abilities of second grade elementary school students. The population in this study was 38 students, involving a sample of 38 students. The data collection method in this research is a non-test method, the non-test used is observation. The collected data was analyzed using the research and development model and Development (R&D) . Media developed by researchers using Indonesian language learning materials with the title Theme 4 My Family in class II at SDN 058238 Bukit Rata. The following are the stages carried out by researchers regarding the development of Big Book media "Beginning reading": (a) Curriculum Analysis: in this step, analyzing the use of the curriculum used in learning at the school where the research was carried out. Based on results analysis data,obtained there is difference which is significant between ability read beginning Which learned use media big book with those taught using conventional learning. Thus it can be concluded that bigbook media influence on the beginning reading ability of second grade elementary school students.
